The Beadwork & Regalia of

Marlana & Kaiahtenhtas Thompson

"Akhwatsi:re (My Family) is a visual representation of the love and gratitude I have for my family. The respect for all my family who have taught me important artist skills, allowing me to carry on my mohawk traditional art and contemporary designs."

-Marlana Thompson Baker

Bead-working / Beadwork & Regalia Workshop

  • "My Family" Akwesasne Beadwork & Regalia Workshops: Saturday, May 18th & June 15th 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. (Multigenerations welcome!)
  • All participants will make a beaded artistic piece that they can take home after the workshop

Artists Marlana Thompson & Kaiahtenhtas Thompson teach beadwork and decorative regalia making in the style of the Akwesasne Mohawk community they are from. Marlana incorporates all the life elements in her works of art, combining traditional touches with the styles of today.

Designs are tailored to reflect each person’s individuality with the use of various mediums, and works to create large-scale pieces for purses, jackets, and wall displays, including smaller adornment items including pins, pendants, and earrings. They combine multiple types of beads and techniques in each piece, resulting in highly textured surfaces, and gravitates to natural imagery of plants and insects as well as culturally symbolic imagery including devising designs based on Mohawk creation stories in pieces that are nonetheless open to interpretation.
